JULY 1, 1998

Thunder. Lightning. Wind. Rain. Storms. Flooding. Flash flooding. Washouts. Power outs. Tornadoes. Deaths.

Something is happening out there, all around the world. El Niño? Yes. Global warming? Yes. Hole in the ozone? Yes. The weather has been changing every day for years, millions and billions of years. Hot and cold. Drought and floods. Species come. Species go.

Humans came, multiplied, dominated the earth, then used up and burned up the resources of the Earth, covering the Earth and atmosphere with toxic waste. Humans changed the weather and then the weather changed the human condition. Humans went, disappearing from the face of the Earth. Gone.

The Earth will heal in time. How long—one hundred years, one thousand years, one hundred thousand years, one hundred million years, a billion years? The Earth will heal.

The Earth loved us, gave birth to us, gave us all that we needed, gave us a home, gave us an opportunity, gave us a chance, gave us love. What have we done to the Earth? What have we done to our home? What have we done to ourselves?
