No Cause for Alarm

No Cause for Alarm

June 27, 2007

Humans showed up on the face of the earth following almost all other life forms. I cannot think of any natural life forms that came after. Overtime humans have evolved to develop a scientific method to help them study, understand and alter the earth, and to create their own technological wonders and new life forms. Humans have dominion over the earth and all living things.

Over the past 100 years human activities and products have created significant global warming consequences that are catastrophically changing the earth. These changes are life-threatening to a multitude of life forms. There is however, no cause for humans to be alarmed.

We do not need to be concerned or worried about global warming. We will survive. In fact we will continue to thrive. We are the most fit to survive. We are the crown of creation. We are now the creators.

Just think of what humans have created in the past 10,000 years, converting from hunters and gatherers to farmers. The thinking and technological changes to make that leap was evolutionary and revolutionary. Or think about the progress humans have made in the past 4000 years with developments of cities and empires, politics, economics and mathematics. Or if you have a hard time remembering that far back, think about the human achievements in the past 500 years, astronomy, physics, ships.

The expansion of human knowledge in the past 100 years has been almost unbelievable: cars, planes, phones, electric lights, medicines, oil and gas, fertilizers, plastic, nuclear energy, computers, space crafts, relativity, chaos theory, quantum physics, weapons of mass destruction, microwaves, genetic modification, McDonald’s and Walmart. Wow!

The miracles of just the past 10 years have been phenomenal. Science and technology are truly amazing. Humans have surely been blessed. The power of advancements is expanding  exponentially. Our scientists are inventing new technologies every day. We are getting smarter every minute!

We do not need to fear our extinction from global warming. Our science and technology have made our species immune to extinction. We have become our science and technology.

We no longer need to live with nature. We have created a world of our own to live in. We live in buildings and vehicles. We are connected to our machines: heating and air-conditioning units, stove, microwave, fridgerader, TV and computer, cell phone and GPS device. Who needs a natural environment when we can live and do live in our own controlled world.

Who gives a hoot about saving the spotted owl, or the whales, or the polar bears, or the buffaloes, or the Karner Blue butterfly, or for that matter any number of lifeforms. Who needs the passenger pigeon, the dodo bird, the dinosaurs or the smallpox virus.

Species come and go. If they can’t adapt and survive predators, climate change or global warming they don’t deserve to live. In a scientific world only the strongest survive. Because of our scientific methods and technology, humans will live forever in spite of our killing the planet with our technology and scientific methods.

Perhaps it is our human destiny to destroy the planet in order to escape the finite earth and to go into the infinite heavens. By destroying the natural environment we will be stimulated to create new technologies to survive in the hostile environments of space.

We have already been to the moon. We currently have a self-contained space station orbiting the earth. We are making spaceships to return to the moon and then to Mars and then beyond. So what if we are running out of oil. We have tons of coal and plenty of uranium and plutonium to launch ourselves into outer space. Perhaps the sooner we can wreck this world the sooner we turn science fiction into reality.

Global warming will create the conditions for humans to radically evolve quickly into a new life form capable of living in our own cyberspace in outer space. Soon the earth will have served its purpose. Soon we will no longer need the earth!
