Old God, New God April 1, 2002 April Fool’s Day
In the old days God was in heaven, yet everywhere, seeing and hearing everything humans did, said, or thought. God was the ultimate all-powerful being who kept track of each and every human, remembering every sinful deed committed. At the end of time God would judge humans according to how sinful they were, sending bad sinners to hell. Humans were afraid of God. They were afraid to break God’s laws for fear of being caught and punished and sent to an eternal hell.
As time when on, science came into existence and evolved. Science started to perform incredible miracles and as people began to worship the power of science, science became more powerful. Science eventually became brave enough to challenge the authority of God. Science said that there was no such God who watched over our every move. Science proved that there was no wise being in the sky who would judge us after our death. We did not need to fear God because this God did not exist. God was like Santa Claus—a myth with no proof of being real. Eventually the laws of science outlawed God.
These days science is God. Science with all its creative technologies is everywhere: computers, satellites, phones, unified banking systems, internet services, DNA testing, blood and urine testing, x-rays and medical machines for EEGs, EKGs, and CT scans, lie detectors, night vision, and supercomputers now keep track of everyone all of the time. Each and every one of our transactions, transgressions, deeds, words, and thoughts are monitored and recorded forever, traceable and unerasable. Science did away with the old God and took God’s place. The ultimate power and authority of science, technology, and commerce is real and watching us and judging us this very moment.
This new God, like the old God, assures me that if I follow all the laws, I have nothing to be afraid of. I fear this new God more than I feared the old God.
